Are you taken by the beauty of the manicured green of a golf course? I am. But imagine my wife’s reaction if I dug up that turf and plopped it down on our living room carpet! That turf is beautiful where it belongs, but it becomes dirty when it’s out of place.
So it is with sex.
God created sex to be a wonderful thing. It is how new life is formed and brought into this world. It’s a critical way in which a husband and wife experience intimacy, oneness, and unconditional love. God assures us that this is good and honorable.
But the enemy of our souls delights in defiling the beauty God has created. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than how sex has been turned into something sinful, nasty, and dangerous.
Sinful? Yes. Scripture makes it clear that all sex before marriage (fornication) and sex with someone besides your spouse after marriage (adultery) is wrong and brings the judgment of God. (Hebrews 13:4)
Nasty? Yes. What God designed to be a holy act of selfless, responsible, and committed love has been turned into selfish, irresponsible lust. How else can you describe pornography, hooking up, fornication, homosexuality, and all manner of things I won’t mention here? (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5)
Dangerous? Yes. What was meant to produce life now leads to heartbreak, hardened hearts, sexually transmitted diseases, abortion, divorce, etc. In fact, can you think of anything that has caused more pain and destruction to the past three generations of Americans than the violation of God’s law regarding sex? I can’t. And this doesn’t even include the damage to our souls caused by giving in to fleshly lusts. (1 Peter 2:11)
Abstaining until marriage and faithfulness in your marriage truly is the difference between “good sex” and “bad sex.”
